KUALA LUMPUR: A 57-year-old former army officer claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to making a false claim for more than RM36,000.

Mahdzir Abdul Hamid was charged with submitting a forged invoice for RM36,440 to Major Majmi Mehat for repairs to four General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) 7.62MM.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Defence Ministry headquarters on March 27, 2008.

The offence falls under Section 11(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act which carries a fine five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and a jail term of not more than 20 years.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Nabila Kamarudin suggested RM40,000 bail with one surety.

Mahdzir who was unrepresented pleaded for a minimum bail saying he was the sole breadwinner for his family.

"I also plan to go for my umrah on Feb 25," he said.

The court set bail at RM25,000 with one surety and fixed Feb 21 for mention.
