KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) has confirmed that Kelantan royal family member Tengku Muhammad Petra was its party member.
Its chairman Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah however denied that the party had employed the royalty to promote its political clout.
“Tengku Muhammad is in his 50’s. He is the son of the country’s sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He is a party member since Dec 9 2016.
“However, we had never exploited him. He only joined us for ceramah events twice. One was in Pasir Mas, the other in Rantau Panjang,” Wan Rahim said when contacted.
He said this when asked to comment on reports that Tengku Muhammad had been appearing at opposition ceramahs.
It was reported that the most recent was when PAN vice-president Husam Musa had apparently introduced Tengku Muhammad as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s “uncle” before the crowd.
Husam’s action is said to have angered the Kelantan palace, which perceived it as a move to ride on the palace’s name and prestige.
This is widely said to have led to the sudden revocation of the Datukships of two top Amanah leaders from Kelantan.
Wan Abdul Rahim said he hoped that the people would stop spreading allegations that the party was exploiting the royal household’s member.”
