I REFER to the article “Gaining diverse perspectives and skills through literary studies” (NST, May 3), and I agree with the significance of studying English Literature and the language.

In the article, Dr Shahizah Ismail Hamdan, coordinator of the Postcolonial Literature in English Programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities English Literature, said: “To declare that the study of English language and Literature is no longer relevant in today’s modern world is inaccurate.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Literature helps us understand the world better. It offers insights into our world, and how cultures, religions and customs shape societies.

As Malaysians, English Literature is important to prepare us as we become a global player.

The ability to grasp the significance of historical events
gives us an edge over others when it comes to making decisions.

Literature is a part of knowledge and to deny its relevance is to mock the knowledge itself.
